Where have you gone?

Where Have You Gone?

Where have you gone? the stars may say.
The darkness crept up on us.
That fate would have you swept away,
Pain, I feel, and sadness.

Will you come again, my love?
Will cruel fate separate?
Can any force be strong enough
To contradict love's sway?

The day was dark and dim, my dear,
And you stood tall and proud.
But as you marched away, I fear
I lost you in the crowd.

The letter was impersonal.
It said that you were gone.
But you, my love, you cannot fall.
I know that they are wrong.

They say it's been, oh, fifty years,
And yes, I'm old and gray.
But still I write through salty tears
Faithfully each day.
